SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Bestek Engineering Inc. of Los Angeles a $709,514 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) contract Sept. 16 to replace a boiler with new boilers and micro-turbines at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Brig in San Diego.

"NAVFAC is proud to support the president's initiative to put people back to work," said Steve Kingsley, NAVFAC Southwest construction manager for this project. "This project will modernize the boilers and provide much-needed improvements to the NCBM (Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar) infrastructure which will help sustain their mission. NAVFAC will ensure ARRA funds will be spent as quickly as possible, with full transparency and accountability."

Bestek Engineering Inc. will replace one fire tube boiler with two water tube boilers and install two combined heat and power micro-turbines. The replacement process includes removal of the existing fire tube boiler and piping designated for removal and performing electrical demolition per design documents. Bestek will also furnish and install a new automatic transfer switch, two new high-efficiency water tube boilers, two micro-turbines and necessary control equipment to integrate new equipment with the existing system.

Bestek Engineering Inc. will provide all necessary piping, mechanical, electrical and other connections to provide a fully functional system at the completion of work. Additional work includes balancing the new system at the completion of all work and to demonstrate operation to the Navy. All work shall comply with engineered design documents and specifications provided.

"Bestek Engineering is proud to have been selected to partner with NAVFAC in carrying out the president's initiative to put people back to work, jumpstart the economy and strengthen America's middle class, while improving the quality of life for service members, their families and DoD civilians," said Joe Shin from Bestek Engineering. "We at Bestek Engineering will step up and do our part in the mission to modernize and improve Navy and Marine Corps installations made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

The project is expected to be completed by June 2010.
