SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- The U.S. Naval Base Guam pool has reopened for command exercises and community usage following a short closure to ensure safety maintenance.
Don Barnthouse, acting Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) director, said the pool closed last month so contractors could repair drain covers at the bottom of the pool.
"While they were doing that, they found a number of tiles that were coming loose, and some other small maintenance issues," Barnthouse said. "We decided to go ahead and take care of all of that in one shot."
Barnthouse said the pool has resumed its normal hours, including lap swimming from 6-8 a.m. Monday-Friday as well as recreational swimming from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends and holidays.
"We'll continue to support our commands with command training, and we'll have the MWR fitness classes there as well, along with the dive instruction courses. So there are a lot of people who've been waiting patiently for the pool to reopen," he said. "What we're really looking forward to is the swim instructional courses we'll be holding in November, which will help us bring back the swim classes for kids and adults."
The resumption of swim classes has been delayed due to lack of qualified instructors. Upon the successful completion of the course, Barnthouse said they hope to have several coaches available.
"That's something we're really looking forward to providing, especially for our children, because they'll learn how to swim but they'll also learn water safety, which is vital for any child especially when they live on an island," he said.
