Man surrenders to police after grenade threat in Chisinau

RIA Novosti

14:53 15/10/2009 CHISINAU, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - A man who threatened to set off a grenade in Moldova's capital a day after a blast at a concert injured dozens of people has surrendered to police, officials said.

The man had taped a grenade to his hand and threatened to blow himself up outside the General Prosecutor's Office in Chisinau, just before an official briefing was to be held regarding Wednesday evening's grenade blast that injured around 40 people.

The man was demanding the release of his son, who was jailed seven years ago for murder.

Moldovan Interior Minister Viktor Katan earlier said it was unclear what caused Wednesday's grenade explosion, which took place on the central square during city day celebrations.

"It remains to be seen whether this is a result of hooliganism, negligence or other causes. We are not ruling out the version of a terrorist attack," he said.
