Chisinau city day festivities marred by blast, 36 injured
12:04 15/10/2009 CHISINAU, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 36 people received various injuries when a grenade exploded during city day celebrations in the Moldovan capital, an Interior Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.
The explosion occurred late on Wednesday in Chisinau's main square, where at least 40,000 people gathered for a concert.
"The number of people injured in the RG-42 fragmentation grenade explosion in the central square has risen to 36. Twelve of them have been hospitalized," the spokesman said.
The country's deputy interior minister, Valentin Zubik, said that seven of the injured were children.
He added that "most likely it was a terrorist attack," but said the possible explanations of hooliganism and casual handling of a grenade were also being investigated.
