EADS Defence & Security to support Thai rescue services in crisis situations by supplying a mobile field hospital
* Medical treatment of injured persons in remote areas without medical facilities
* Successful deployment in disaster relief worldwide
14 October 2009
EADS Defence & Security (DS) will supply the Royal Thai Air Force with its “TransHospital” type of field hospital system, which is designed to provide quick medical care for injured persons in areas without medical facilities. Thanks to this system, Thai rescue services will be able to ensure a quick and reliable response to military and civil emergencies.
TransHospital has already demonstrated its operational capabilities during various disaster relief missions. In 2005, for example, it was deployed as a rescue station in the U.S. Gulf Coast for supporting the relief operations following the devastation caused by the hurricanes Katrina und Rita. Another rescue station was set up in Indonesia at the beginning of 2006 for contributing to the relief effort in a region which was particularly hard hit by the tsunami.
“The capability of providing protection and medical treatment on high quality levels is becoming more and more important – not only on the battlefield, but also in disaster areas or during national emergencies,” explains Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Defence Electronics.
The TransHospital system can be made fully operational by six persons within a period of only four hours. Subsequently, it can ensure autonomous operation for 72 hours without requiring any logistic support. The system to be delivered to the Royal Thai Air Force has the capacity to treat five in-patients and ten out-patients at the same time. Moreover, for extending capacity, the staff accommodation for ten persons can also be used for patients. Delivery of the system is scheduled for the spring of 2010. Several TransHospital units have already been delivered by Defence Electronics (DE), an integrated activity of DS, to the Bundeswehr and to other armed forces worldwide.
The TransHospital rescue station with staff accommodation comprises two large tents, a rescue container, a connection module, a water and power supply container as well as a transport container. All of these modules are air-conditioned to cope with ambient temperatures ranging from minus 32° to plus 55° Celsius. The efficient air-conditioning systems for this wide temperature range were also specifically developed by Defence Electronics.
TransHospital can basically be transported by truck, train or vessel. However, the system to be delivered to Thailand will additionally be capable of being transported to the operational area using an aircraft of the C130 type.
Defence Electronics is an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide.
