SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Souza Construction Inc. of Farmersville, Calif. a $339,118 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)-funded contract Sept. 14 to restore aged and deteriorated cooling towers at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
"The improvements provided by this project will replace three rooftop deteriorated cooling towers serving the computer rooms at building 1 NMC, which are rusting and are at the end of their useful life expectancy," said Neil Odish, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for this project. "Naval Medical Center San Diego delivers quality health services in support of the Armed Forces, maintains medical readiness, and provides advanced military medicine through education, training and research. The cooling towers provide condenser water cooling for part of the building and the computer center."
Souza Construction Inc. will perform the necessary work for the design and replacement of three rooftop cooling towers. The work includes removing existing cooling towers, installing three new stainless steel cooling towers, replacing non GFCI receptacles with GFCI type, upgrading the existing Direct Digital Control system, installing new piping to the isolation valves, repainting mechanical equipment enclosure, and repairing any damaged roof system.
"The award of this ARRA project will provide more energy efficient operation of the facility while creating jobs by providing equal opportunity employment within the small business contracting community and expend funds to assist in stimulating the economy," said David Doty, Souza Construction Inc. director of construction. "Additional monetary saving will result from lower operational and maintenance costs realized."
Work is scheduled for completion by March 2010.
