Taliban destroy cell phone tower in north Afghanistan
18:25 26/09/2009 KABUL, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - Taliban militants have destroyed a cell phone tower in the northeast Afghan province of Kapisa, some 80 miles from the capital Kabul, police said.
Afghan police said the "enemies of peace and stability" had attacked and destroyed communications antennas belonging to the Ariba company.
Ariba is one Afghanistan's major cell phone companies and has been operating in the country since a U.S.-led force toppled the radical Islamic Taliban group in 2001.
This is the first attack on a cell phone tower by the Taliban for some six months. NATO forces have previously pinpointed the locations of Taliban militants by homing in on their cell phone conversations.
