WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. (NNS) -- Surface Combat Systems Center (SCSC) Wallops Island, Va. activated the Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) infrastructure for use aboard the Next-Generation Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyer Sept. 10.

TSCE-I provides the infrastructure for the development, integration, test, and support to reduce both cost and risk. It also ensures high levels of availability, increases survivability, and lowers the costs required to keep system software up-to-date. The net benefits to be realized from the DDG 1000 software design extend beyond DDG 1000 itself. Having a single, standard Command and Control system across the entire Navy reduces life cycle costs across multiple ship programs.

"This is an important milestone in providing end-to-end testing for the Zumwalt Combat System and the Dual Band Radar. The testing that will be done at Wallops over the next couple of years will pay big dividends in reducing risk for both the DDG 1000 and CVN 78 programs," said Capt. Timothy Mull, DDG 1000 system integration program manager for Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS).

Coupling the TSCE-I with the developmental dual-band radar, installed at Naval Sea Systems Command's field activity SCSC Wallops Island represents the first phase of system-level integration to be conducted at the test facility over the next three years.

The installation of TSCE-I at SCSC Wallops Island will provide the test site the ability to load current and future releases of TSCE software in an integration and test-like environment. Having the TSCE infrastructure on site will also support future integration of the Mission System Equipment (MSE) with TSCE Software.

"SCSC is proud to support the completion of TSCE-I hardware installation in the Wallops Island Engineering Test Center, and we are looking forward to the commencement of software testing on site in early 2010," said Scott Greene, SCSC Wallops Island, lead for DDG 1000 Systems Integration & Test.

Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems is an affiliated Program Executive Office of NAVSEA which manages surface ship and submarine combat technologies and systems, and coordinates Navy open architecture across ship platforms.
