NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The commander of U.S. 2nd Fleet visited Brazilian frigate BNS Liberal (F-43) during its port visit to Naval Station Norfolk Sept. 10.
Liberal is in Norfolk as one of 13 ships from nine foreign nations preparing to participate with U.S. forces in the upcoming Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HST CSG) Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) 09-4, Sept. 14-22 off the East Coast of the United States.
Vice Adm. Mel Williams Jr. also toured Liberal's bridge, combat command center and engineering spaces. Williams met with crew members throughout his tour.
The admiral explained it was important for him to take the time to visit Liberal and meet its crew as they prepare to participate in the upcoming JTFEX.
He reaffirmed that one of the three focus areas for 2nd Fleet is to team with allies and partners in execution of the Maritime Strategy.
"Thank you for being a part of this training and certification event for the Truman Carrier Strike Group," he said. "The robust coalition and joint participation in this JTFEX is significant. It makes sense that we train the way in which we will operate while on global assignments – joint and with our allies and partners."
Liberal will operate as part of the HST CSG during the JTFEX.
"Protecting the high value targets is our mission during this exercise," said Liberal commanding officer Cmdr. Flavio Haruo Mathuiy.
JTFEX is a scenario-driven tactical exercise in support of major combat operations for the HST CSG, and will provide the necessary training for the strike group to proceed into a Fleet Synthetic Training – Joint exercise for final deployment certification.
