SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Syska Hennessy Group Construction Inc. of San Diego a $655,205 Recovery Act funded contract task order Aug. 12 to install solar power and upgrade lighting at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton, Calif.

"NAVFAC is enthusiastic about supporting the president's initiative to enhance America's energy independence," said Michael Savena, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for this project. "This project will initiate putting people back to work and jumpstart the economy, while improving the DoD goal for renewable energy initiatives. In addition, the air station will offset their electric utility costs through the installation of solar power and reduce utility costs by installing more efficient lighting."

The project will install a 50 kilowatt (kw) solar photovoltaic power system at an air station building. The installation of external lighting upgrades will also improve the energy efficiency around the air station.

"The air station is proud to support the initiative to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil by installing photovoltaic arrays," said Col. Michael Lawrence, MCAS Camp Pendleton commanding officer. "These arrays will provide clean and renewable energy to our infrastructure while at the same time providing a much needed upgrade to an ailing electrical and lighting system."

Syska Hennessy Group Construction Inc. will install solar panels on a building used for storage of ground support equipment and adjacent to two other buildings that will be receiving solar photovoltaic systems from other energy conservation projects. The installation will include a complete photovoltaic system with supply rated alternating current, poly crystalline photovoltaic modules or panels, main and sub-components, equipment mounting and support boxes, wiring, and conduit.

"The Marine Corps has some significant needs for new and upgraded facilities at MCAS Camp Pendleton, so it's great to see them supporting a significant amount of their new energy requirements with a clean, renewable energy source, especially in Southern California where air quality is such a critical issue," said William T. Line, Syska Hennessy Group Construction Inc. president and chief operations officer. "Syska Construction is very pleased that the Navy and Marine Corps has looked to us to deliver this important project."

Syska Hennessy Group Construction Inc. will complete work by winter 2010.
