NEW YORK (NNS) -- USS Carney (DDG 64) was featured in a parade of modern and historic ships along the Hudson River Sept. 8 and kicked off a weeklong series of events to mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival to New York City.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg welcomed Dutch royalty on the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum as part of the ceremony, which also included NATO vessels, Dutch naval frigates and a replica of Henry Hudson's ship the Half Moon.
Carney is the only ship from the parade staying in port in Manhattan, moored at Pier 90 on 47th Street through Sept. 12.
"It was an honor to be part of a celebration 400 years in the making," said Carney Commanding Officer Cmdr. Brendan McLane. "We're now looking forward to a great week in one of the best cities in the world."
Carney is equipped with some of the world's most sophisticated weaponry and will be open to the public for free tours Sept. 9-10 from 830 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and her crew of about 280 Sailors will be in New York City to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They are currently preparing for a deployment with the Eisenhower Strike Group.
