KWAJALEIN, Republic of the Marshall Islands (NNS) -- Pacific Partnership 2009 returned to the Republic of the Marshall Islands for 12 days as part of a four-month mission when USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4), an underway replenishment ship, arrived here Sept. 7.
Pacific Partnership previously visited the Marshall Islands two years ago.
Pacific Partnership works by, with and through partner nations, nongovernmental organizations and other U.S. government and international agencies to execute a variety of humanitarian civic assistance (HCA) missions in the Pacific Fleet area of responsibility from a ship dedicated to this HCA mission.
Building on partnerships forged in previous missions, the team for Pacific Partnership 2009 includes military and government personnel from Australia, Canada, Republic of Korea and the United States, as well as civilians from Project HOPE and University of California San Diego Pre-Dental Society who will work alongside their Marshallese counterparts.
For this mission, Byrd is outfitted with humanitarian civic assistance equipment and supplies and a staff augmented with a robust multi-specialized team of preventive medicine personnel, veterinarians, medical and dental teams and engineering personnel.
This year Pacific Partnership 2009 will focus its mission efforts for the people of Republic of the Marshall Islands ashore by conducting medical, dental, veterinary and engineering programs at specific sites on Majuro and Kwajalein atolls.
