New Results Push Karzai Closer to Victory

By VOA News
06 September 2009

The latest election results in Afghanistan show President Hamid Karzai getting close to the majority vote needed to avoid a runoff.

The results, released Sunday, show Mr. Karzai with 48.6 percent of the vote. Top challenger Abdullah Abdullah has 31.7 percent.

Afghan election officials say the count is based on roughly 75 percent of the country's polling sites.

Officials also said Sunday that they have thrown out votes at 447 polling stations due to allegations of fraud.

Independent Election Commission official Daoud Ali Najafi did not reveal how many votes had been affected by the decision.

The country's Electoral Complaints Commission has received more than 2,000 allegations of fraud or abuse from the August 20 presidential election. It says that some of the complaints, if true, would affect the final result.

The commission has been slowly releasing results from the election.

Final results are expected later this month after officials investigate the fraud allegations.
