Thales Reorganizes to Manage U.S. Growth
03 September 2009
Alexandria, VA, September 3, 2009 – Thales North America, Inc. today announced several changes to the company’s U.S. organization. Thales North America, renamed Thales USA, Inc., has established Thales USA Defense & Security, Inc. The business will focus on marketing Thales technologies and services to the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, state and local government entities and industry partners.
“Thales has been very successful in the U.S. defense market for decades. Thales USA Defense & Security brings together a number of sets of established Thales businesses into one coherent, integrated organization,” said Allan Cameron, Thales USA President & CEO.
A wholly-owned subsidiary of Thales USA, Thales USA Defense & Security will operate under management and a board of directors distinct from the parent company. Thales divisions worldwide are integrated into the business’s marketing and sales efforts, with a particular focus on naval, airborne, land and security opportunities in the U.S.
“Thales USA Defense & Security provides the organizational structure needed to elevate our value to customers and partners from that of a trusted supplier to the level of trusted partner,” said Cameron. “The new Thales defense and security business was established to enhance our relationships with the customer, understand requirements and deliver the Thales technologies that best meet the need.”
Thales’s U.S. operation has successfully grown a defense and security business over the ten years since a series of acquisitions strengthened its U.S. presence. Thales’s communications business in Clarksburg, Maryland, now a U.S. proxy company, was acquired from Racal in 2000. The business has grown from less 200 people when acquired nine years ago to over
600 employees today, supplying software-defined, interoperable radios to each branch of the U.S. military.
Thales supplies the avionics for the U.S. Army’s Light Utility Helicopter, with Irvine, California serving as the lead Thales U.S. location coordinating with prime contractor EADS North America. In the naval domain, Thales is the supplier of the combat management system for General Dynamics’ littoral combat ship, through an agreement with Northrop Grumman.
Thales joint ventures in the U.S., such as ThalesRaytheonSystems, DRS Sonar Systems and ACSS continue to provide mission-critical technologies to a wide range of military air defense and naval programs, as well as civil aviation efforts in the U.S. and overseas.
“Thales in the U.S. continues to build a defense and security business from the bottom up, making critical contributions to the U.S. warfighter and first responder,” said Allan Cameron. “Thales USA Defense & Security will ultimately enable Thales to access more opportunities, including classified programs.”
Thales USA is the U.S. corporate headquarters for Thales SA, which maintains a U.S. presence of 15 primary locations in 10 states. Including Thales employees within joint venture businesses, the company has nearly 3,000 U.S. employees.
Thales is a global technology leader for the Aerospace, Space, Defense, Security and Transportation markets. In 2008, the company generated revenues of 12.7 billion Euros (approximately $18.6 billion) with 68,000 employees in 50 countries. With its 25,000 engineers and researchers, Thales has a unique capability to design, develop and deploy equipment, systems and services that meet the most complex security requirements. Thales has an exceptional international footprint, with operations around the world working with customers as local partners.
