Bethesda, Md. (NNS) -- The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) announced Aug. 23 the award of a design/build contract to Whiting-Turner Contracting Company in the amount of $181 million for the completion of Phase II of the Future Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Phase II construction consists of non-clinical BRAC related construction projects on the Bethesda campus primarily for warrior transition support facilities.

"Getting Phase II underway is critical to base support, integration, the BRAC project and most importantly to the environment for our wounded warriors," said National Naval Medical Center Commander Rear. Adm. Matthew Nathan. "These folks deserve our best, and this will continue that journey."

One of the projects included in Phase II is a multi-story building combining bachelor enlisted quarters, a dining facility and a warrior transition administrative office.

A new fitness center is also in development to replace the current Comfort Liberty Zone.

The new facility will include a 50-meter pool, a gymnasium, a fitness and training area, a running track, and volleyball, basketball and racquetball courts. An Integrated Cardiac Health Program and ancillary facilities will also be within the fitness complex.

A 145,000 sq. ft. administrative building will be built on the site of the unoccupied Bldg. 17. The majority of the building may be demolished, while the facade and end will be protected, reinforced and restored.

A new 565 parking space garage will also be erected. All structures will meet USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver level certification. Phase II of the construction is scheduled to be completed by summer of 2011.
