Secretary-General condemns brutal bombing in southern Afghanistan
26 August 2009 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned yesterday’s suicide bomb attack in Kandahar city which killed over 40 civilians and wounded more than 80 others, and which his top envoy to Afghanistan said shows a “staggering” disregard for innocent lives by the perpetrators.
The truck bomb exploded on Tuesday evening in a residential area of the city near a Japanese construction company, a guest house used by foreigners and government offices, according to media reports.
Mr. Ban was “shocked and dismayed” when he learned of the attack, his spokesperson said in a statement. “He condemns in the strongest possible terms this brutal and senseless act of violence.”
Kai Eide, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, offered his deep condolences to all those who have suffered as a result of the attack, which comes just days after the country’s presidential and provincial council elections.
“The disregard for civilian lives shown by the perpetrators of this attack is staggering,” Mr. Eide said in a statement issued in Kabul.
