CRANE, Ind. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) engineers offered presentations at the 46th annual IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) held July 20-24 in Quebec City, Canada.

NSREC provides scientists and engineers with the opportunity to discuss the latest practices for understanding and testing systems used in radiation-exposed environments. Attendees participated in a one-day course on Selection of Integrated Circuits for Space Systems and a four-day technical program. This program consisted of multiple speakers, a data workshop and the presentation of three invited papers.

NSWC Crane representatives presented a total of 11 posters and publications at the conference. Presentations focused on the research and development of radiation-hardened components and weapon systems that are critical to the nation's strategic deterrence and defense. Collaboration with academia also was showcased at the conference; NSWC Crane has two Ph.D candidates at Vanderbilt University who are studying the effects of radiation on electronic components and leading collaborative efforts with the university and NSWC Crane.

Three engineers were recognized as leaders and experts within the radiation effects community at the conference. Jeffery Titus, NSWC Crane radiation sciences engineer, received an award for his position as poster session chair; Steven Clark, NSWC Crane radiation sciences chief engineer, was appointed secretary of the Radiation Effects Steering Group for 2010-2012; and Sarah (Nation) Armstrong, NSWC Crane engineer and Vanderbilt University Ph.D candidate, was recognized as this year's Data Workshop chair. All three individuals are nationally recognized experts of radiation effects and often provide guidance and support to others in the community.

"Participating in radiation sciences focused conferences, such as NSREC, allows us to present, discuss and plan future research activities in a collaborative environment. We use this information to plan the work that ultimately leads to future developments for the testing and support of components in numerous weapons systems," Lydell Evans, NSWC Crane Radiation Sciences branch manager said of the conference.

NSWC Crane strives to enable its employees to have opportunities to attend conferences such as NSREC. Participation in these events provides the Command with valuable technical information while ensuring the warfighter receives trusted, ready and reliable systems.
