SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Stronghold Engineering Inc., of Riverside, Calif., a $1.91 million Recovery Act funded contract Aug. 5 to design and build carports with solar power at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego.

"This project to construct solar carports at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will not only provide jobs for local contractors, it will provide an environmentally conscious energy source that relieves demand on the strained electrical grid," said Jermaine Starks, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for the solar carport project.

"NAVFAC and the Marine Corps are working to provide 'green' energy and other similar sustainable energy solutions as part of the president's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

Stronghold Engineering Inc., will design, construct and interconnect utilities for carports with solar photovoltaic (PV) electrical generating systems. The solar carports will supply power to the buildings and send excess electricity produced back into the civilian sector power grid.

"Stronghold Engineering, Inc., is pleased and fortunate to be awarded the design build solar carport project at MCAS Miramar," said Charles Gossage, Stronghold Engineering Inc., executive vice president. "This project is intended to capitalize on natural resources to generate energy and reduce energy costs for decades to come. Importantly, this project is part of an initiative to enhance America's energy independence and improve quality of lives through clean, natural energy."

The contractor will complete work by spring 2010.

"With this project, the Navy and Stronghold Engineering will immediately create new and sustaining jobs, immediately expend funds that help stimulate our improving economy and construct a project that the Marines and general public can be proud of given the source of funds," said Gossage. "Stronghold is very pleased to return to Miramar and continue its partnering effort with Navy to deliver the highest quality of design build projects for the use and benefit of the Marines."
