SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Hal Hays Construction Inc., a $4.2 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) contract for the repair and renovation of former Assault Amphibian School building at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Aug. 7.

"NAVFAC is proud to support the president's initiative with award of this contract, which is expected to put more people back to work and help jump start the local economy while improving the working conditions for our Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton," said Stephen Palmer, NAVFAC Southwest design manager for the project.

One of the goals of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton is to upgrade and modernize older buildings and bring them up to current code standards, making them safer, more energy efficient and providing higher quality working conditions for many Marines.

"NAVFAC and the Marine Corps are extremely pleased to have this renovation project become a reality, said Palmer."

Hal Hays Construction Inc., will provide all the necessary work to repair and improve the two-story building to accommodate the headquarters for 3rd Assault Amphibious Battalion. The building will continue to train Marines in the operation and maintenance of the amphibious assault vehicle (AAV).

"We look forward to jumpstarting the economy and strengthening America, while improving the quality of life for service members, their families and DoD civilians", said Hal Hays, Hal Hays Construction Inc., president.

"This project will allow Hal Hays Construction Inc., to employ additional workers and keep current employees working year round due to ARRA funding of this project," said Denise Hays, Hal Hays Construction Inc., executive vice president.

Work is expected to be completed by September 2010.
