SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- Effective Aug. 5, Commander, Navy Region Marianas has officially been renamed Commander, Joint Region Marianas (JRM).
"There's been a lot of hard work to make sure we are on track with bringing Joint Region Marianas to its full operational capability on Oct. 1, 2009," said Rear Adm. Douglass Biesel, commander, JRM.
"As men and women from both Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB) and U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) continue in their efforts, the official name change signals how close we are to reaching our strategic imperative of providing consistent, high quality installation support to our mission commanders, service members and their families."
With the change of name comes a modified mission statement that better reflects JRM and its role in the western Pacific.
Commander, JRM's mission is to provide executive level installation management support to all DoD components and tenants through assigned regional installations on Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands in support of training in the Marianas; to act as the interface between the military and the civilian community; to ensure compliance with all environmental laws and regulations, safety procedures and equal opportunity policy; and perform other functions and tasks as may be assigned.
The transition to JRM was publicly announced with a groundbreaking ceremony of the new headquarters on Nimitz Hill, matched with a logo unveiling ceremony Feb. 6. The transition was a result of Base Realignment and Closure Act 2005's direction to consolidate military installation management functions on the island.
Under JRM, AAFB and NGB will retain separate base commanders who will oversee operations and mission requirements for their respective installations. JRM will be responsible for all installation support management functions.
Leaders say JRM gives Navy and Air Force base commanding officers the freedom to concentrate on their mission priorities.
