Naval Submarine Support Kings Bay Gains New Commander

KINGS BAY, Ga. (NNS) -- Naval Submarine Support Center (NSSC) Kings Bay held a change of command ceremony at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., Aug. 7.

Cmdr. Dan Way relieved Cmdr. Mark Guevarra as commanding officer of NSSC Kings Bay.

After Guevarra took command of NSSC in May 2007, NSSC Kings Bay set the standard for manning and transient personnel management throughout the submarine force. For the command's work, NSSC Kings Bay received the Commander, Navy Personnel Command Certificated Pipeline Movers Award.

NSSC is responsible for coordinating submarine movements in Navy Region Southeast ports and for coordinating transits within the three ports of Kings Bay, Mayport, Fla., and Port Canaveral, Fla., with the U.S. Coast Guard.

"He was the driving force in streamlining every aspect of waterfront operating, including upkeep, material readiness, logistic and administrative support for the Atlantic Fleet Submarine Force," according to Guevarra's award citation.

Guevarra's next assignment is as the Commander, Submarine Group 2 shipyard representative to Northrop Grumman Ship Building in Newport News, Va.

After enlisting in the Navy in 1981, Way went on his first sea tour aboard USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) where he struck interior communications electrician and completed six deterrent patrols out of Holy Loch, Scotland.

Way then served as an instructor at Submarine Training Facility Charleston in Charleston, S.C. Following acceptance into the enlisted commissioning program in 1988, he attended The Citadel and earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science.

Upon commissioning in 1990, Way completed nuclear power training and reported to USS Trepang (SSN 674). Way then served as a shift engineer at Moored Training Ship 626 in Charleston.

In 1998, Way reported to USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) as the engineer officer, completing five deterrent patrols. From there, he served as the Submarine Squadron 16 material officer.

In 2003, Way reported to USS West Virginia (SSBN 736) as the executive officer. He then served as deputy commander for Training, Submarine Squadrons 16 and 20 until 2007.

Most recently, Way worked in the Current Operations Directorate, Center for Special Operations, U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla. During this tour, he forward deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
