BINTURAN, Brunei (NNS) -- Recognizing the need to collaborate during regional crises, the armed forces of Brunei and the United States participated in a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) exercise at the Binturan Shooting Range Aug. 6.

The exercise is part of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Brunei 2009, a bilateral exercise designed to exchange knowledge and strengthen maritime security through shared training, equipment and manpower.

During the HADR exercise scenario, which included a series of storms causing landslides ashore and a fishing vessel capsizing at sea, Royal Brunei Land Forces soldiers and U.S. Marines simulated a combined amphibious landing at Binturan and engaged in search-and-rescue operations for injured personnel, played by both U.S. Marines and Bruneian forces.

Ashore, Bruneian soldiers and U.S. Marines worked to locate survivors and transport the injured to a Royal Brunei Land Forces field hospital for initial triage and stabilization. They were then transported via a U.S. Navy SH-60B Seahawk helicopter to the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) for further treatment. At sea, Harpers Ferry, the guided-missile destroyer USS Chafee (DDG 90) and guided-missile frigate USS Crommelin (FFG 37) coordinated with Royal Brunei Navy patrol vessels to find the capsized fishing vessel and rescue its crew.

The HADR exercise was observed by Rear Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, Logistics Group Western Pacific, and the CARAT task group commanders, Royal Brunei Navy Lt. Col. Spry bin Haji Seruji and Capt. William Kearns III, commander, Task Group 73.5.
