SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Synergy Electric Company Inc. of Santee, Calif., a $3.92 million Recovery Act funded contract July 23 to install roof mounted solar photovoltaic power systems (SPVPS) on buildings at Naval Base Coronado.

"The project replaces roofs in need of repair with a renewable energy roof system that will work towards the DOD goal for enhancing America's energy independence while providing opportunities to partner with the contractors and subcontractors to provide jobs and jump start the economy," said Napoleon Biagtan, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for the photovoltaic project.

Synergy Electric Company Inc. will install 133,440 sq ft. of SPVPS on three buildings at Naval Base Coronado. The project includes the demolition and replacement of roofs on buildings to ensure their integrity, longevity, and suitability to have the SPVPS installed. The SPVPS will supply power to the buildings and send excess electricity produced back into the civilian sector power grid.

"This project will stimulate the economy, provide economic benefits to the region and reduce America's carbon footprint by using renewable solar energy that provides clean electrical power," said Diane Keltner, Synergy Electric Company president.

The contractor will complete work by January 2010.

"The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act will allow all Americans to 'Work Together' to rebuild our great nation," said Keltner.
