From Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Sigonella
CAMP LEMONIER, Djibouti (NNS) -- Navy leadership from Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Sigonella and Camp Lemonier in Djibouti (CLDJ) entered into an agreement Aug. 1 under which FISC Sigonella will deliver focused logistics services to support camp operations.
Camp Lemonier, a U.S. naval expeditionary base and home to the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa and the U.S. Africa Command, was established as the primary base in the region for the support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Horn of Africa.
Preparations are now being made to transition Camp Lemonier to an enduring base. Commander, U. S. Navy Africa/Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia determined that many of the supply functions currently performed by CLDJ supply personnel and the base operating support contractor under a contract managed by Naval Facilities Engineering Command Europe and Southwest Asia should transfer to FISC Sigonella, the primary provider of logistics services to Navy, joint and allied forces in Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia.
"This arrangement will ensure the delivery of best value traditional FISC products and services," said FISC Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. John Camuso.
FISC Sigonella will provide products and services to include husbanding; material management; postal; transportation; hazardous material management and reuse; logistics support center services; and household goods movement, an installation function that exists in more developed Navy bases. This function will be established when Camp Lemonier becomes an enduring installation.
FISC Sigonella will also provide some non-traditional logistics products and services such as mortuary affairs and management of surplus material.
The agreement allows Camp Lemonier to leverage FISC Sigonella's global logistics network capability and to benefit from the full spectrum of resources managed by the Naval Supply Systems Command.
"Everyone will benefit from the increased logistics capabilities realized in this agreement," said Camuso.
Military logistics professionals assigned to Camp Lemonier will transfer to FISC Sigonella but remain in Djibouti. Until the transition of Camp Lemonier to an enduring base is completed, these 12 personnel will continue as individual augmentees or GWOT-support assignments but will fall under FISC Sigonella for management purposes until permanent military and U.S. civil service positions are established.
FISC Sigonella, the newest of seven supply centers under Commander, Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers (COMFISCS), provides logistics, business and support services to fleet, shore and industrial commands of the Navy, Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command and other Joint and Allied Forces in Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. COMFISCS comprises more than 7,500 military and civilian logistics professionals operating as a single cohesive team providing global logistics services from more than 135 locations worldwide.
A component of the Naval Supply Systems Command, headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pa., COMFISCS is part of a worldwide logistics network of more than 25,000 military and civilian personnel providing combat capability through logistics.
