INGLESIDE, Texas (NNS) -- South Central Regional Maintenance Center (SCRMC) held a disestablishment ceremony July 24 at Naval Station Ingleside (NSI).

SCRMC, a tenant command aboard NSI, disestablished as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) ruling.

"Today, we are not here to mourn the loss of South Central Regional Maintenance Center; rather we are here to celebrate the achievement and history of a world-class organization," said Rear Adm. Joseph F. Campbell, the keynote speaker and deputy commander of Logistics, Maintenance, Industrial Operations, Naval Sea Systems Command.

SCRMC provides comprehensive maintenance, modernization, repair and worldwide support for the surface mine warfare fleet.

The repair function is moving to Southwest Regional Maintenance Center in San Diego.

"The (base closure) decision was difficult for the community and employees of SCRMC," Campbell said. "But the actions following the decision showed the true character of the people of South Texas.

"At the end of the day, you displayed real patriotism and pride. You … pressed forward with your new orders to disestablish. All the while, you provided the highest levels of ship repair, maintenance, modernization and worldwide support to mine warfare systems."

"I'd like to personally thank each and every SCRMC Sailor and civilian, past and present, for your creativity, enthusiasm and perseverance throughout the BRAC process," said Cdr. Robert Williams, commander of SCRMC.

Of the approximately 300 military and civilian SCRMC personnel, approximately 10 percent of the military and 50 percent of the civilian billets are moving to San Diego. The additional military and civilian personnel will be reassigned or will retire.

The mine warfare ship repair function was established aboard NSI at the base's official dedication in July 1992. The repair organization was established as Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) Ingleside. Since its beginning, the repair facility has changed names, merged and modernized several times. In October 2004, Regional Support Group Ingleside, Fleet Technical Support Center Atlantic Detachment Ingleside, Supervisor of Shipbuilding Jacksonville Detachment Ingleside and SIMA Ingleside were combined to form SCRMC.
