PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- The Navy has awarded Square D Company of Palatine, Ill., three contracts totaling $31 million dollars for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) energy projects in Washington State.

The contracts, awarded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will fund the construction, design and installation of advanced electric, gas, steam and water metering to provide utility and energy monitoring at Naval Station Everett, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and Naval Base Kitsap.

"This project will enable us to make great strides towards management, control, and adjustment of energy consumption across Navy Region Northwest," said Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest Commanding Officer, Capt. Pat Rios.

"These contracts are the direct result of the Administration's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which is providing Department of Defense (DOD) components with the necessary resources to produce huge energy savings for the Navy and American taxpayers," said Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center Commanding Officer, Capt. Gregory J. Zielinski.

"Improvements in metering technology now allow for lower labor costs due to remote meter reading and reduced stress on electrical grids and associated infrastructure. Moreover, AMI enables energy consumers to proactively manage their energy use and conserve energy during peak usage periods."

Under the terms of the contract, Square D will design, install and test building level advanced metering solutions to assist the Navy and Navy Region Northwest in reaching energy usage reduction goals as mandated in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Both acts encourage increased energy conservation, energy efficiency and research and development of new renewable energy technologies to reduce the nation's dependency on foreign oil sources.

The contractor will soon begin work on the advanced metering projects in Silverdale, Oak Harbor and Everett, Washington, with an expected completion date of July 2011.

The Navy's AMI program is expected to have a global impact, with an estimated 20,000 advanced meters eventually deployed and in use at 40,000 facilities throughout 120 Navy and Marine Corps installations worldwide by the year 2013.
