BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock held a change of command ceremony July 16 at Carderock's Maritime Technology Information Center; NSWC Carderock is a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
Capt. Chris D. Meyer relieved Capt. Mark W. Thomas as commander.
"This simple, traditional ceremony happens all the time all over the world and represents the awesome exchange of power that allows our republic to remain free," said Rear Adm. James Shannon, commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center, who served as guest speaker.
"It really seems like yesterday that I was on the other side of the salute, and today it's my turn to become part of Carderock's past," Thomas said.
Thomas shared the story of an Iraq veteran who was medically retired from the Army and is now a new employee at Carderock's Bayview, Idaho, detachment - hired through coordination with the Wounded Warrior Program.
"I encourage all of you in positions of leadership and authority to go the extra mile to seek out our returning service members and bring them aboard so that they can again put their skills to use for the good of our nation," said Thomas.
Thomas will next serve at NAVSEA's Surface Ship Design and Systems Engineering Department
Prior to coming to NSWC Carderock, Meyer served the Program Executive Office for Aircraft Carriers and the CVN 21 Future Aircraft Carrier Program as the assistant program manager for the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System and the Advanced Arresting Gear.
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The outstanding technical capability and the extraordinary talent of the men and women of the Carderock Division are well known," said Meyer. "As a long-time customer of Carderock, I can say from first-hand experience that there is no finer, more dedicated group of people."
Mark you have left a legacy of leadership an accomplishment that will remain with this organization for years to come; it is my honor to follow in your wake," said Meyer. "Best of luck to you as you transition to your new job at the Navy Yard. I know you will continue to do great things for our Navy."
