SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) -- Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF), Pacific Northwest held a change of command and retirement ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, July 10.
Capt. Donald Neubert relieved Capt. James Stone as commanding officer.
Rear Adm. Timothy Giardina, Commander, Submarine Group Trident, and Capt. Mark Whitney, commander, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and IMF served as guest speakers.
"Jim Stone will be passing on to Don Neubert what I think is one of the most critical jobs in our Navy - ensuring that our Trident submarines are properly maintained, repaired and modernized so that our submarine crews can continue to perform their mission in support of our great nation," said Giardina. "And let me be clear, the IMF team isn't repairing and maintaining simple equipment. These submarines and surface warships have some of the most sophisticated equipment our nation has ever produced."
Whitney spoke about the many significant accomplishments during Stone's command and noted that an impressive 35 Trident submarine refits, 34 voyage repairs and 30 docking and undocking events had occurred, three of which were emergent.
"It is imperative to keep the Navy's strategic assets mission-ready. During a time of naval transformation and local evolution within Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & IMF, under Captain Stone's leadership, the work force here continued to accomplish refits and voyage repairs on time and on budget," said Whitney.
Stone, who assumed his post as commanding officer of IMF Pacific Northwest in July 2007, will retire after serving more than 38 years in the Navy.
Neubert comes to IMF from Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., where he served as director for Netcentric Communications and Network Operations. A native of Ridgefield, N.J., he received his commission in 1985 through the Nuclear Propulsion Officer Program after graduating from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. In 1992 he earned his masters degree in mechanical engineering at Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., and obtained his professional engineers license in mechanical engineering. He served on USS Lafayette (SSBN 616), USS Atlanta (SSN 712), USS Chicago (SSN 721) and commanded USS Annapolis (SSN 760).
"I will work my hardest to maintain and continuously improve upon the incredible maintenance record of the superb IMF work force," said Neubert.
On May 15, 2003, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Pacific Northwest (located at Bangor, Bremerton and Everett, Wash.) consolidated into one maintenance activity - creating PSNS & IMF. The consolidation improves fleet readiness by allowing the Navy to accomplish the highest priority, real-time ship maintenance requirements while achieving the most maintenance effort possible for the tax dollar. The commanding officer, IMF Pacific Northwest, reports to Capt. Mark Whitney, commander, PSNS & IMF.
