NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Mid-Atlantic, selected two small business contractors to perform critical repairs to a building facility and berthing structures at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine.
Funds for both contracts were awarded in late June through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, and work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2010.
"This work will strengthen the shipyard's ability to more efficiently execute its mission by upgrading and modernizing critical infrastructure," said Cmdr. Rod Moore, public works officer at the public works department, Maine.
P&S Construction, Inc., a small business located in Lowell, Mass., received $4,057,000 to perform roof and window replacement, repairs to exterior masonry and incidental related work in Building 170. The building is the primary production training facility used to provide formal academic and skills training for the shipyard's workforce.
Berths 7a and 7b at the Naval Shipyard will also undergo repairs through the ARRA. CPM Constructors, a small business located in Freeport, Maine, received $4,842,219 construction contract to perform structural repairs of the existing granite and precast concrete quay wall, removal and reinstallation of existing utilities and fenders, filling any underwater voids in the granite/precast concrete wall and incidental related work.
These projects, as well as those that will follow under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, are intended to bring more jobs to the contractor community, contribute to a more energy efficient infrastructure and provide much needed improvements to Navy facilities while improving quality of life for Sailors and their families.
As an integral part of the NAVFAC enterprise, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic manages the planning, design and construction of shore facilities for the U.S. Navy from Maine to North Carolina.
