GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- The Department of Defense's (DoD) 2009 Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) exercise concluded July 11 after Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB) 2 and two support ships departed Guantanamo (GTMO) Bay.
The exercise, sponsored by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, tested the military's reaction time when faced with disaster relief or humanitarian assistance needs.
JLOTS personnel used an elevated causeway system modular (ELCAS [M]) to quickly offload supplies from ship to shore during the exercise.
According to Navy Capt. Paul Webb, JLOTS commander and commanding officer of ACB 2, the first JLOTS exercise held in GTMO was very successful.
Webb said that he can take everything he learned from the exercise to the DoD, and the JLOTS experience can be a foundation for future contingency operations.
"We will find out how to best apply these [new found] capabilities," said Webb. "Then we'll make them task-tailored."
Webb said that Joint Task Force and Naval Station (NAVSTA) GTMO were instrumental in ensuring ACB 2's success throughout the mission.
"We leave here having accomplished every goal," said Webb. "We even had incredible opportunities to look at some strategic issues, and as a side benefit, we helped build the Guantanamo River bridge."
Webb said the hospitality he experienced in GTMO was like no other in his 24-year naval career.
"It's a pleasure to have been here," said Webb. "Our Seabees, Soldiers and other Sailors are better today because they've been to Guantanamo Bay."
