SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Stronghold Engineering Inc., of Riverside, Calif., a $3.37 million Recovery Act funded contract task order June 22 to install new power lines and build a new substation at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif.
"This fourth phase of a five phase project will continue the task of replacing the base's fifty-five- year-old electrical distribution system which has become unreliable and inefficient," said Lt. Cmdr. Jason Zeda, NAVFAC Southwest resident officer in charge of construction at Travis Air Force Base. "The new switches, transformers and conductors will provide a high level of maintainability and standardization, ensuring a consistent supply of electricity to the 21,000 personnel that work and call Travis home."
Stronghold Engineering, Inc. will remove and replace the existing 5 kilovolt (kv) power lines with new 12 kv lines. The contractor will also demolish and remove an existing substation and construct a new substation. The finished project will install a new system for the base.
"Stronghold Engineering, Inc. is pleased to be the recipient of the 'replace 5 kilovolt power lines at Travis Air Force Base' project as a part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality of life for our service members," said Charles Gossage, Stronghold Engineering, Inc. executive vice president. "This project is part of an initiative to replace sub-standard infrastructure and enhance America's energy independence. With this project, the Navy and Stronghold Engineering, Inc. will immediately create new jobs, expend funds that help stimulate our improving economy and construct a project that the military and general public can be proud of given the source of funds."
The contractor will complete work by spring 2010.
