GREAT LAKES (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Midwest is using a Willoughby, Ohio,-based small business to make repairs and upgrades at a Navy Reserve support facility in Cincinnati.

The $2.3-million project, awarded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to Pinnacle Construction Development Group June 18, will repair and renovate the 30-year-old, 44,000-square-foot main building at the Cincinnati Navy Operational Support Center.

"We are pleased to be able to make these much-needed improvements to the facility here while supporting the Recovery Act's broader goal of putting people to work and stimulating the economy" said Navy Lt. Torben Smith, who leads NAVFAC Midwest's Public Works Department Central, which oversees facilities engineering and public works at Navy and Marine Corps reserve facilities throughout the Navy's 16-state Midwest region.

The project includes repairing and cleaning building exteriors, installing new flooring and ceilings, improving lighting at the site and repairing and replacing interior climate control and electrical systems.

The renovations will improve the Reserve unit's ability to conduct training and administration activities for Navy Reservists assigned there. Having an improved facility will also boost the unit's recruiting and retention rates and morale by providing a better working environment.

The project is expected to be complete in July 2010.

Pinnacle Construction is also making $2.7 million in repairs and upgrades to the adjacent Marine Corps Reserve facility, also awarded under the Recovery Act.

Additional Recovery Act projects to be awarded by NAVFAC Midwest include construction of a new child development center at Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Tennessee, renovations of Navy Reserve centers in Illinois and Tennessee, renovation of a Marine Corps Reserve center in Nebraska, and renovations and repairs to base infrastructure at Naval Support Activity Crane, Ind. In all, NAVFAC Midwest will oversee $36 million in Recovery Act projects.
