SAIC Awarded $13 Million Contract to Support Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Machine Reading Program

--Company to Help Bridge Gap Between Human Textual Representations and Those Used By Machines

SAN DIEGO and MCLEAN, Va., July 7, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (NYSE: SAI) today announced it has been awarded a prime contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U. S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). SAIC will create a research framework for the development of reading system technologies and evaluate the performance of these technologies in support of DARPA's Machine Reading program. The contract has a five year period of performance and is valued at more than $13 million. Work will be performed primarily in Arlington, Va.

DARPA's Machine Reading program seeks to advance the ability of machines to understand text by bridging the gap between human textual representations and those used by machine reasoning systems. Under the contract, SAIC will design and implement a complete research framework that supports the development of Reading System technologies. This framework will support progress in the field by program participants and a broad community of researchers in the artificial intelligence and natural language processing communities. SAIC will also conduct performance evaluations of technologies developed by program participants.

"The goal of the program is to create general purpose reading systems which can ingest, understand, and make inferences from the mountains of text that collectively encode vast stores of knowledge inaccessible to current technology," said John Fratamico, SAIC senior vice president and business unit general manager. "We look forward to helping build a strong and successful program that serves as the foundation for an exciting new research area with broad applications in the defense and intelligence communities, as well as the commercial market."
