NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Wasp (LHD 1) hosted a change of command ceremony in the ship's hangar bay July 2.
Capt. Lowell D. Crow relieved Capt. Daniel H. Fillion as Fillion expressed his gratitude to the crew and praised their successes while under his command.
"You amaze me with your teamwork – Wasp Sailors always strive to build the team and to be a part of it," said Fillion. "What we have is a crew with character. It is that character, and our teamwork, that has brought this ship from perhaps somewhere in the pack to the front of the pack. Commanding Wasp was an amazing tour, and I will treasure it as the highlight of my career."
Crow graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science. He began his career in surface warfare aboard the dock landing ship USS Anchorage (LSD 36). His tours of duty include assignments with USS New Jersey (BB 62), USS Germantown (LSD 42), USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), USS Ogden (LPD 5), Amphibious School Little Creek, Va., U.S. Transportation Command, Commander Naval Base Pearl Harbor and Chief of Naval Operations Expeditionary Warfare Division.
During the ceremony, Crow described the Sailors he will lead aboard Wasp and expressed his optimism for the future.
"It is not the commanding officer that makes this ship great, but it is the wardroom, the chief's mess, and the crew that have made Wasp what it is today," said Crow. "As I have been known to say, you are either part of the steamroller or part of the pavement. Every one of you is truly part of the steamroller and committed to excellence and meeting every challenge head on."
Wasp is the lead ship of the Navy's eight Wasp-class ships and the tenth ship to bear the name.
