Jacksonville, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $15.5 million design build construction contract June 26 to Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., out of Raleigh, N.C. for a new open bay barracks facility at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.

The work to be performed includes the design and construction of the barracks and a battalion aid station, associated storage, utilities, parking, site improvements, built-in equipment requirements, access, and anti-terrorism force protection.

"This project is in direct support of United States Marine Corps 'Grow the Force' initiative which is part of a presidential proposal to increase its overall end strength from 180,000 to 202,000 by fiscal year 2011," explained Resident Officer in Charge of Construction Lt. Cmdr. Ronald Jenkins. "To arrive at the end number, Parris Island requires additional Barracks space to handle the influx of additional recruits coming into the training pipeline."

Jenkins further explained that Parris Island is the Eastern Marine Recruit Depot that "Makes Marines" for the United States East of the Mississippi River and the Caribbean.

Work for this project is expected to be completed by December 2010.
