Veolia Environnement and DCNS create a joint venture

26 Jun 2009

Veolia Environnement and DCNS are combining their expertise in a joint venture, Défense Environnement Services. This joint-venture will be a leading operator in services to military bases.

Paris, June 26, 2009 - Veolia Environnement, the global benchmark in environmental solutions, and DCNS, the European leader in the naval defense sector, today announced the creation of the joint-venture company Défense Environnement Services, which will mainly specialize in military base management. This joint-venture is owned 51% by Veolia Environnement and 49% by DCNS.

The creation of Défense Environnement Services comes as a response to the growing demand to manage state support services, such as the operation and maintenance of infrastructure at military bases, under the French government's General Review of Public Policies. Défense Environnement Services offers comprehensive, innovative solutions that cover a wide range of support services at military bases.

To provide these services, Défense Environnement Services will call on the complementary expertise of its two parent companies. DCNS specializes in particular in the monitoring and maintenance of sophisticated industrial infrastructure and in operating industrial facilities, as demonstrated by the services it provides for the Brest and Toulon naval bases. Veolia Environnement has expertise in industrial maintenance (utilities and energy production and distribution) and site management (corporate concierge services, cleaning, transportation, waste management, and so on).

Défense Environnement Services will be offering its services not only to army, naval and air force bases, but also to civil ports and other specific sites. Currently, Défense Environnement Services already offers management of technical infrastructure and general services at some sites.

Through this joint venture, DCNS wants to extend its services to new markets as part of its sustainable development approach. "Our unrivaled experience in high-technology services places us in a position to bring genuine added value to the armed forces in the operation of their bases," said Bernard Planchais, Chief Operating Officer of the DCNS group.

For Veolia Environnement, the joint-venture combines its skills as an industrial service company specializing in environmental solutions with the specific expertise of a company specializing in the defense sector. This will reinforce Veolia Environnement's capabilities for clients in this market. "Our experience with industrial sites and challenges will benefit military bases and guarantee efficient, top-quality support," said Stéphane Caine, Executive Vice President, Industrial & Tertiary Markets for Veolia Environnement.

Défense Environnement Services is co-managed by DCNS and Veolia through a Management Board with an evenly distributed number of members. Its chairman will be put forward by Veolia Environnement and its chief Executive Officer by DCNS.

Veolia Environnement (Paris Euronext: VIE and NYSE: VE) is the global benchmark in environmental solutions. With more than 330,000 employees, the company has operations all around the world and provides tailored solutions to meet the needs of public authority and industrial clients in four complementary segments: water management, waste management, energy management and freight and passenger transportation. Veolia Environnement recorded revenue of €36.2 billion in 2008. www.veolia.com

The DCNS Group is one of Europe's leading players on the world market for naval defence systems. To meet customer demands for more comprehensive and integrated systems, DCNS acts as prime contractor for naval shipbuilding, integration and support by combining its own development, marketing and production capabilities with those of selected partners. To manage the complexity of such projects, the Group draws on in-house expertise in naval architecture and systems engineering, ship assembly and integration and equipment design and production, as well as through-life support. The DCNS Group employs 13,000 people and generates annual revenues of around €2.8 billion.
