YUMA, Ariz. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Syska Hennessy Group Construction, Inc. of San Diego a $391,139 Recovery Act funded contract to install a roof mounted solar photovoltaic system at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Yuma, Ariz., June 18.
"NAVFAC Southwest Desert Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) Energy group is proud to support the president's initiative to put people back to work and jumpstart the economy, while improving the DoD goal for renewable energy initiatives" said Chau Vu, NAVFAC Southwest project-leader for the MCAS Yuma Solar Photovoltaic Rooftop Power Installation project. "The project will reduce energy dependence from the commercial power-grid and provide energy-security for MCAS Yuma."
Syska Hennessy Group Construction, Inc. will plan and execute the design, installation, commissioning and testing of a 32 killowatt (peak) direct current, crystalline panel-technology, solar photovoltaic system on the roof of an air station building.
"We are very excited with this project and that the president's initiatives are moving forward as planned," said Derrick Gutierrez, associate partner and program manager for Syska Hennessy Group Construction, Inc. "Although this is a relatively small project in scope, it is a great project for the following reasons: We are starting to build alternative energy resource projects that are lowering our carbon footprint and helping the environment. With the depletion of fossil fuels and the finite number of barrels [of oil] that can be produced, solar energy ...becomes our most viable energy-resource. It's good to see America's commitment to solar energy."
The contractor will complete work by December 2009.
