Newport, R.I. (NNS) -- Supply Corps active and Reserve flag officers and senior executives met and discussed major challenges and initiatives affecting the community during a conference at Naval Station Newport, June 18.
Naval Station Newport is home to many military educational institutions—including the prestigious Naval War College—and more than 42 naval and defense commands. The base employs more than 6,000 people and hosts 13,000 military students annually.
The major topics discussed included an overview/update of the enlisted, officer and Reserve communities; the Supply Corps 2040 Strategic Vision Study - a project that provides a glimpse of the community's future operating environment; and execution of the Global Logistics Support strategy, which involves putting in place a robust logistics network to bolster Navy's strategy to forward deploy and maintain large task forces to fight and win wars.
"We are a nation at war and every supply officer plays a key role in the fight," said Rear Adm. Mike Lyden, 45th chief of Supply Corps and commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP). "We [Supply Corps] must posture ourselves to be as effective as possible to help to support our Navy and its warfighters."
Conference attendees also had the opportunity to see the new Navy Supply Corps School, currently under construction at Naval Station Newport. This new facility is expected to be completed in 2010. The current facility is located in Athens, Ga.
Lyden said the meeting provided an opportunity for senior leadership in the Navy Supply Corps to share ideas and discuss important issues.
"Conferences like this enable us to make a lot of progress in achieving our objectives and in better defining our future path," he said.
The primary mission of the Supply Corps is to provide expertise to the Navy and other services, including logistics, acquisition, and financial management afloat and ashore. The Supply community is comprised of more than 3,600 naval officers and 22,000 enlisted personnel responsible for the supply and logistics support of the ships of the active fleet and hundreds of naval shore installations worldwide.
