SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- On July 28, Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) is closing its main gate, also known as gate 6, for reconstruction. It will be closed from Harbor Drive to Surface Navy Way and from building 29 to Robertson Street. Gate 7 will become the main gate while gate 6 is under construction.
The main gate is being redesigned in order to make flow of traffic more efficient, beautify the area and most importantly, make the entrance safer for those who guard it.
Currently, the configuration is a 'T' intersection and under the new construction plan, a traffic circle will be implemented. A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has determined that traffic circles are much safer than other kinds of intersections. Additionally, the traffic circle will improve the traffic flow off of Harbor Drive, the Interstate-15 and reduce transit time for those who access the area.
A part of the new construction will be the implementation of guard shacks similar to what is on North Island. The new guard huts will provide shelter from the weather and a layer of protection from vehicles for the security watch.
In order to mitigate the traffic during peak hours, the Security Department will be running an operational test July 17 to ensure that the best plan is in effect when gate 6 is closed.
Starting July 13, trucks and commercial vans that must be security screened will need to go to gate 40A located on McKinley Avenue off of Civic Center Drive. The hours of operation will be from 0500-1400.
The entire project is scheduled to cost $2.2 million and take an estimated 10 months. NBSD, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest and Allen Engineering Contractor Inc., are working together to ensure this project will be a quality of life improvement to those who frequent NBSD while ensuring there is minimal impact to the local community and personnel who work at NBSD while the construction is occurring.
