The DGA selects Thales to bring 60 FENNEC helicopters up to ICAO standards

15 June 2009

Paris Air Show, 15 June 2009 - The French defense procurement agency (DGA) has granted Thales a contract to bring the FENNEC helicopters operated by the French Air Force and by ALAT (the French Army's Light Aviation division) up to ICAO* standards. These upgrades mean that the helicopters can be introduced into Europe's civilian air traffic.

This €34-million contract sets to upgrade communication, navigation and identification equipment on 60 FENNEC military helicopters. The 5-year contract features a one-year engineering phase that will be validated with a series of in-flight qualification tests. This phase will be followed by equipment integration and in-service support.

"Thanks to our experience installing and upgrading onboard equipment and the excellent quality of our range of products, our proposal is both innovative and inexpensive," explains Laurent Maury, Director of the Customer Support and Services business line, Thales Land and Joint Systems Division. "Providing high value-added service solutions is one of the priorities and key assets in Thales' development. We have a broad offer that ranges from maintenance to turnkey solutions. We aim to provide comprehensive services to equip armed forces for quick response as operations conducted by joint and allied forces become increasingly common."

This success puts Thales as a major actor of the ICAO upgrade market for all types of air platforms in France and abroad
