ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE (NNS) -- Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 53 held a change of command ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base June 6.
Cmdr. Karin Kulinski was relieved as commanding officer by Cmdr. Cathy Jendrysik.
For the first time in the squadron's history, two women assumed responsibilities as commanding officer and executive officer of an aviation squadron.
Rear Adm. Robin R. Braun, deputy commander, Navy Recruiting Command, guest speaker, touched on how important that feat is to her.
"Back in 1979, when I first joined the military, the thought of two women serving as CO [commanding officer]and XO [executive officer] of an aviation squadron was inconceivable," said Braun. "It took 34 years until last year when Commander Kulinski and Commander Jendrysik took over, and I'm very, very proud of them, and they've done an amazing job."
Prior to taking charge of VR 53, Kulinski, a Naval Academy graduate, left active duty in 1997 and joined the Navy Reserve. From 1998 until 2009, Kulinski has been a member of the 'Capital Express.'
In her 11 of service to VR 53, she has served as the public affairs officer, assistant training officer and the administrative officer just to name a few as well as flying worldwide C-130 missions.
In her remarks to the crew, Kulinski thanked everyone from the maintenance department to the flight crew.
"I would often tell the XO that I could handle anything but a plane crash or a death," said Kulinski. "Thank you all for making my command tour a success and still being here today."
Jendrysik entered the United States Navy in 1990 after graduating from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
Serving on board numerous squadrons, Jendrysik became a member of VR 53 in March 2008 where she took over as the executive officer.
