Within the framework of the Defence Program RP 08, Armasuisse, the procurement and technology centre of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) has placed an order for 12 NBC Reconnaissance Vehicles. Thales will be acting as prime contractor, with the Swiss company Mowag acting as sub-contractor.
Jyväskylä, 7th NBC Symposium, June 9th 2009 - After the successful roll-out of a pre-series vehicle, which was commissioned in 2006, a series of 11 vehicles will now be procured. The Swiss Army will have a total of 12 NBC Reconnaissance Vehicles at their disposal, by the end of 2011.
Mowag will build the carrier vehicle Piranha IIIC and integrate the Thales NBC solution. Thales will insure functionality in the range of integrated network and power management within the vehicle. Thales will also be involved with regards to the NBC sensing, analysis and evaluation systems. The NBC reconnaissance vehicle will enable specialists-lead missions on-site, in a protected environment, in the event of a threats or catastrophe of a nuclear (N), biological (B) or chemical (C) nature. It provides military and civil authorities with the the ability to retrieve and analyze test samples from the soil, the water and/or in the air, transmit those results, mark contaminated areas, generate prediction maps and thus support the forecast process.
The vehicle guarantees a long mission autonomy and can, thanks to its advanced features, and in addition to its military tasks, be used for industry-related incidents or in connection with terrorist threats, to the advantage to civil authorities.
