JTF-134 Detainee Operations drops to one brigade; decrease of 2,186 personnel since Jan. 1
BAGHDAD — Joint Task Force-134 Detainee Operations dropped to just one brigade to run all three U.S. theater internment facilities in Iraq following a transition of authority ceremony held June 8 at Camp Cropper.
Reducing from two brigades to one continues an overall JTF-134 theme that has seen the operation decrease by 2,186 personnel since Jan. 1. The reduction in personnel demonstrates Multi-National Force-Iraq’s commitment to the Security Agreement, which requires all U.S. forces to withdraw from Iraq by Dec. 31, 2011.
“It’s not easy doing the same work with fewer people, but we are committed to being good partners with the Government of Iraq and adhering to the Security Agreement,” said Brig. Gen. David Quantock, MNF-I Commanding General of Joint Task Force 134. “The number of detainees in Coalition custody continues to reach new lows not seen in years, and even with fewer guards and staff, we will continue to safely and humanely carry out our important mission until we can hand off detention operations to the Government of Iraq next year.”
The 89th Military Police Brigade, from Fort Hood, Texas, now runs the day-to-day detention operations at Camps Cropper, Bucca and Taji. Each facility is scheduled to be closed or turned over to the Government of Iraq by Aug. 31, 2010, in accordance with the Security Agreement.
As of today, there are 11,057 detainees still in Coalition custody. Once the total detainee population drops below 8,000, the theater internment facility at Camp Bucca will close and all detainees will be held at Camps Cropper and Taji. The Camp Taji Theater Internment Reconciliation Center is scheduled to be turned over to the GoI in early 2010. Camp Cropper will be the last detention facility turned over to Iraqi control, currently scheduled for August 2010.
