NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) held a grand opening ceremony of its flight deck May 28 after three years of reconstruction and maintenance.

"Everyone has worked very hard to make this day happen," said Commanding Officer Capt. Ted Carter. "Just look at this four and a half acres here. It is a symbol of all the hard work that went into bringing this flight deck to life."

Cmdr. Muhammad Khan, air boss, pointed out some of the hard work air department did to get the flight deck operational. Each division had a part, such as V-1 supervising 100 percent completion of the four and a half acres of non-skid, V-2 successfully rebuilding and testing all four catapults, V-3 painting 200,000 square feet of hangar bay space, V-4 safely and efficiently on-loading 1.6 million gallons of JP-5 and V-5 successfully completing rehab and overhaul of primary flight control.

"This is the first time, compared to previous overhauls, that the flight deck has been ready prior to going out for sea trials."

Carl Vinson is completing its scheduled refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.

During RCOH, Carl Vinson's nuclear fuel has been replenished and the ship's services and infrastructure upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and prepare for another 25 years or more of service.
