BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- President Barack Obama visited the National Naval Medical Center to meet with wounded warriors and their families June 1.

Obama met with seven inpatients, 16 outpatients and more than 25 family members. He also presented two Purple Hearts.

During his hour-long visit, which was closed to the media, the president personally recognized more than 90 hospital staff members.

Obama has recognized the armed services, particularly wounded service members, during his presidency. Specifically, he spoke at the Commander in Chief's Ball on inauguration night and hosted wounded veterans at the White House prior to them embarking on a 65-mile ride from Washington, D.C. to Annapolis.

The president's wife, Michelle, has made wounded warrior care a top priority. She recently met at the White House with the spouses of each services' senior enlisted advisers to discuss the impact of deployments on families and explore resources for returning warriors and their spouses.
