CIS defense ministers to discuss military cooperation up to 2015

Moscow, June 2, Itar-Tass/IRNA -- Defense ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will discuss prospects for the development of military cooperation up to 2015, announced the Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev.
In an interview with Itar-Tass on the eve of a session of the CIS Defense Ministers' Council due on Wednesday, Lebedev said, "Multilateral military cooperation remains one of the key dynamically developing components of strengthening security, counteraction to new challenges and threats and, as a whole, of the further development of the CIS."
The defense ministers plan to discuss 20 issues concerning various aspects of interaction of the Commonwealth's military structures.
"First and foremost the ministers will define conceptual approaches to the development of military cooperation of the CIS countries up to 2015. Then they will approve a schedule of common activities by the CIS countries' armed forces till 2010," Lebedev said.
"The conceptual approaches, which are currently being formed for the upcoming five-year period, make one sure about the continuity of military cooperation in the CIS and its good future," he said.
"The defense ministers will analyse the flight safety situation in the CIS armed forces an make a decision on the creation of a package of applied programs ensuring the successful operation of a unified information and analysis flight safety system and the reliability of CIS military technologies," he said.
Lebedev also said the participants in the session would approve 'a plan for joint exercises by air forces and air defense troops, make a decision to create the a coordination center for the upgrade of military hardware and the rules of information exchanges, and discuss personnel training and re-training'.
