4 Afghan Police, 4 US Troops Killed in Separate Attacks
By VOA News
01 June 2009
Officials in Afghanistan say three separate attacks have killed four Afghan police officers and four U.S. soldiers.
Afghan officials Monday said Taliban militants attacked a police outpost near the northern town of Kunduz, killing four police officers.
In eastern Afghanistan, NATO said two different roadside bomb explosions killed four soldiers from the NATO-led force. Military officials said they were U.S. troops, but did not say where they were killed.
The attacks came as Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy announced that he will double Belgium's civilian aid to Afghanistan over the next two years.
The Belgian leader was in the capital, Kabul, on a previously unannounced visit. He told reporters Belgium will budget $17 million a year for Afghan aid in 2009 and 2010.
Van Rompuy said the stabilization of Afghanistan is strategically important "not only for the region, but the rest of the world."
Belgium has about 600 troops in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led force there.
