PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- System engineers from Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Port Hueneme began installation of software-based, enhanced imagery capability aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) during the week of May 18.
The upgrades are a part of an ongoing effort mandated by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to complete installation of the Imagery Exploitation Support System (IESS) software upgrade on available fleet assets by the end of May 2009. These upgrades are fielded in support of the agency's commercial imagery requirements and national imagery exploitation system segment and architecture enhancements.
"IESS fields new capabilities and supports future imagery architecture-driven requirements," said Cristina Zamboni, NSWC Port Hueneme system engineer.
"The software upgrade is critical to support near real-time dissemination of intelligence products to fleet users. It is critical to ensure uninterrupted capability to receive and exploit tactical imagery."
To date, the upgrade has been successfully installed on USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS John Stennis (CVN 74), USS Essex (LHD 2), USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19).
Through such upgrades and enhancements of U.S. Navy ships' systems capabilities, NSWC Port Hueneme, a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command, helps sustain today's fleet efficiently and effectively and increases current fleet readiness.
