Thales celebrates final FFG provisional acceptance
29 May 2009
Chris Lloyd, Thales Australia's Naval Division Vice President, said it was a momentous day for the FFG Upgrade program.
"The FFG Upgrade has been one of the most complex undertakings in Australian defence history," he said.
"These four ships - HMAS SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, DARWIN and NEWCASTLE - are now highly capable warships thanks to the enhancements provided by this program." The FFGs have been upgraded with improved anti-ship missile defence (the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile), on-board electronic support systems, tactical data link capability, underwater warfare systems, training systems, ship service diesel generators and other systems.
"To take ships of their age and install and integrate new systems, weapons and capabilities has been a massive undertaking with many technical and programmatic challenges. The result is new capabilities for the Royal Australian Navy and added flexibility for the fleet to support Australia's ongoing national and international commitments."
"I would like to congratulate the many hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have worked on this program over the years. Special recognition goes to the DMO for their continuing program leadership and management of myriad stakeholders, to the Commanding Officers and their ships' companies for their professionalism, and also to our partners large and small for their hard work, expertise and cooperation in bringing this project to its successful fruition."
