Israeli troops kill senior Hamas militant in West Bank

RIA Novosti

18:4128/05/2009 TEL AVIV, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli Army killed on Thursday in the West Bank a senior Hamas militant who was wanted for the deaths of at least 10 Israelis, an army spokesman said.

Abdel al-Majid Dudin was shot dead during a shootout in the village of Deir al-Assel al-Tahta, southwest of Hebron, after he refused to surrender to Israeli soldiers who had surrounded the house he had taken refuge in.

Dudin had been wanted by Israel since 1995, after he was accused of organizing two bus explosions that killed 4 and injured 100 in Jerusalem, and in another that killed 6 and injured 40 in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv.

"He was a leader of Hamas's armed wing in the West Bank," the spokesman said.

Hamas has confirmed that Dudin was a commander in the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades.

After the bombing in Jerusalem, Dudin was arrested by the Palestinian National Authority and imprisoned, but was released in 2000 at the start of the second uprising against Israeli forces.
